Had One Forever, Buying One for the Mrs.5
I've had a Valentine 1 since the early 90's. Over the years, it has been upgraded and has consistently been a top performer. Since those early days, these new V1s offer laser, a reinforced power cord (fixing a former Con), slightly modified/improved interface (see Pros) and new detection capabilities for instant-on radar.

Pro:
-Incredible detection range that always amazes my passengers... consistently voted #1 in the rankings in laser and radar tests, usually only dinged for price (see Cons) or styling. (Are they serious? Who care's if it's boxy?)
-Able to track multiple targets at one time (9), which at first sounds silly, but it helps you filter threats. With other detectors you may think "I must have passed him by now" while with V1 you'll see that you've transitioned from 2 overlapping signals, one may be false one may be real.
-Able to tell that you've passed a target. Signal in front will shift to side lights and then to rear helping you ID where the signal is.
-Is he behind me? Front AND rear detectors I think makes this detector a one of a kind. Often gives you plenty of time to move over for him. Rear indicator light is super handy.
-Black color (unit, mounts and cables) blends into your dash and does not reflect as much light and glare as its shiny counterparts. I can't believe the competition has gone with the shiny titanium styling... silly!
-The longer power cord (four feet?) looks like a "phone cord" and is reinforced nicely, a vast improvement over the early V1 cords
-The shorter power cord (two feet?) is a coiled power cord... it is springy and has less slack than the longer cord supplied
-Also has pieces for hardwiring the unit, but I suspect you'll need to buy wire and an installer (not a typical do it yourselfer project)
-Comes with a mediocre visor mount, however the glass mount (with spare suction cups) is just awesome! After 15 years, the design is still unbeaten!
-Variable volume and mute settings, with one-touch mute (press once to switch from full volume to your preset muted volume). When new distinct threat is detected, audio alert is restored to full volume.
-Optional concealed display that plugs into the cigarette lighter (must be purchased separately)
-Display has one LED for each type of radar detected (laser, Ka, X, and K) supplementing the different audio beeps for each type (laser also has an additional visual warning as these are almost never false alarms and give you the least reaction time)
-Display will show a "J" when a signal is determined to be "junk", a false-alarm. When you get the "J" your V1 is telling you that it is retracting the warning from this signal.
-LEDs are arranged vertically, laser ("L") is on top, Ka next, then K, and last X, representing threats ranked from lowest (top LED) to highest probability (bottom LED) of a false alarm
-Nice muting feature that allows you to preset mute volume... Will return to full volume if muted and a new signal is detected
-You can buy spare pieces on-line (an extra cost, but reasonably priced)
-Lights are not overly bright at night... still very visible but not distracting either
-3 sensitivity settings: "all bogeys", "logic" and "advanced logic". Advanced logic filters the most for those who hate false alarms.
-Loudest setting is very loud, softest is off, with a nearly limitless number of levels in between. Mute can be any volume that you choose and does not necessarily have to be off

Con:
-EZPass (automatic electronic toll payment) sets off the laser warning, and the unit goes nuts (again the laser warning is intense). Also, laser can be triggered by close proximity (15' in my experience) of the tail lights to certain American-made cars when they hit their brakes (confirmed by the manual).
-Price... ouch
-Detectors aren't legal in some states/areas
-Some claim that's it's boxy styling is a turn off, but come on, it's all about having the best detection!
-Visor mount is not very good (too tight) on thicker sun visors
-L, Ka, X, and K next to their LEDs is stenciled on... at night it's hard to tell for instance if Ka is being located or X. There's no good reference and the letters are not illuminated.

Bottom line: Highly recommended/don't leave home without it. I liked mine so much that I have just bought another one for my wife.

I've tested all the top models...this is the hands-down winner5
For years Valentine had Escort and the others completely trounced. Finally, with the X50, Escort came close to Valentine in some respects. Their new GPS detector the 9500i is also based on the 8500 X50 model. The thing is, Valentine keeps a commanding lead in four respects:
1. Yes, Escort now equals Valentine on K and Ka (but not X band); however, Valentine responds much better to instant on.
2. Valentine's laser detection is insanely good. No one comes close...and that's what you need with laser, because it is very hard to "spot."
3. Because of patent considerations, Escort can't have front and rear antennae on their unit and tell you what direction the radar is coming from. This is actually a VERY useful feature...and the rear antenna lets you know when a mobile instant on unit is creeping up behind you.
4. Valentine detects instant-on POP radar nearly 100% of the time. Escort just plain doesn't see it half the time.
I've driven with one since the mid 1990s, and never received a ticket while using it. It's the best investment you can make in driving peace of mind.

Peerless performance5
I've had a Valentine One for four years and am preparing to order another one for our second car, since I've just had the first one hard-wired into our new one. The hands-down "winningest" features are the arrow system to tell you where the radars are and the "bogey counter" that tells you how many different signals the V1 is receiving. My wife is very impressed that the V1 can see so far down the road and over hills. Some reviews snipe at the V1's boxy styling. I didn't buy it to make a fashion statement. I bought it for its unmatched performance. There is a very nifty option: a small lightweight plastic block called a "concealed display" that has the direction lights, type-of-radar lights, and a mute on/off button. I velcro-mount it to my steering wheel column near the dash, so I don't have to look up to see what's going on (my V1 is near the roofline). Think about how much a ticket would cost, adding in risk of an insurance premium increase. The V1 is the way to go. Recommend that if you hard-wire the unit, you have the tech leave the in-line fuse exposed or at least easy-to-access.

I love it!4
Im very pleaed with this radar detector.. Ive had it in my car for a few months now, and it has proven to be quite reliable. I admit, it doesnt have the best distance in detection (maybe an 8th of a mile if your lucky), but for the price and the fact that you dont need a cord attachted to it 24/7 is great. it looks good in the car too! I got one for a friend as well.

Cobra XRS-9930 12-Band Radar/Laser Detector
From Cobra

Cobra 12 Band High Performance Digital Radar/Laser Detector with Electronic Compass, Voice Alert, Battery Voltage Display and POP Mode Detection

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #16690 in Consumer Electronics
  • Brand: Cobra
  • Model: XRS 9930
  • Dimensions: 1.00" h x 3.00" w x 5.00" l, 4.00 pounds

Whether you commute to work or school on the freeway, drive for a living, or just like to go on an occasional recreational trip, the Cobra XRS-9930 Radar/Laser Detector is an invaluable addition to your motor vehicle. Designed for the convenience of 24-hour use, the XRS-9930 has an extra bright full-color digital display that can be dimmed for nighttime driving. Measuring 4.88 x 3.01 x 1.44 inches and weighing just 6.74 ounces, the XRS-9930 can be set just about anywhere within easy view when you're driving, and then stored in your glove compartment when you're parked.

The XRS-9930 detects six different radar signals, including the Ku wavelength band that is widely used in Europe and that has been recently approved for use in the United States. In addition, the XRS-9930 is completely invisible to the VG-2 and Spectre radar detector detectors while it alerts you if either the VG-2 or the Spectre is in use in your area.

The XRS-9930 is also sensitive to four different laser signals, and with its LaserEye feature giving you a 360-degree detection range, you'll always be able to tell if you're driving through a surveillance area. And perhaps most importantly, for your own safety and the safety of other drivers sharing the road with you, the XRS-9930 detects two emergency alert systems to give you advance warning of road hazards, keeping you prepared when emergency vehicles are nearby. In addition to detecting the Safety alert system, the XRS-9930, like most of Cobra's Radar/Laser detectors, offers Cobra's exclusive feature of detecting the presence of the Strobe alert system, which emergency crews use to control traffic signals.

Other features include a voice alert and an easy-to-program menu, as well as power features such as automatic shutdown when you turn your ignition off and a battery voltage display. So get the Cobra XRS-9930 Radar/Laser Detector for your car or truck, and you'll be prepared for just about anything when you're behind the wheel.

Note: Radar detectors can be used without restriction in well over 40 states, but restrictions apply in a few states. Please check with your state department of motor vehicles or highway patrol if you have questions about whether there are restrictions in your area.

What's in the Box
XRS 9930 radar/laser detector, windshield bracket, coiled power cord, hook and loop fasteners, and owner's manual.

Cobra XRS-9930 in use4
purchased this detector for 12 hour drives through 4 states I make about 5 times a year. Amazon's price was great and I did not expect this unit to compete with others costing 3x or 4x more. When mounted high on the front windshield, it has "OK" range - not great - but OK. It receives all the most common law enforcement radars in use today, but when it sounds off the transmitter is not all that far away - trust it and slow down for anything other than an "X Band" alert (I will probably turn that off in the menu ) I really like the auto volume control where it will turn down the alert volume after the first alarm - you don't need to listen to the beeping alarm at full volume. The voice announce of the type of radar is good also, you don't even need to look at the unit display to know what type of radar is being used. I hate the short curley power cord....made my own out of straight wire (Cobra sells one, but I'm too cheap). Good unit for the price !

Stationary radars in San Francisco5
I got this today and couldn't wait to try it out. So i drove around the Bay Area and had a good experience. I drove from Emeryville into the city, then hop onto 280 south down to redwood city, swing back onto San Mateo bridge and then up 880 north.

First, the X band went off a lot in emeryville, which was okay to me since X band is known to have false alarms. But it didn't go off much at all when i was on the freeway.

On 19th ave, there's a digital posting of your speed and so i know for sure there's a radar there. The speed sign is 1 block from golden gate park. I got a K1 alert as i exit the park and i never got anything else after i passed it.

The next exciting road was the San Mateo bridge. It has a sign saying "Radar enforced". So i was wondering where the radar is. I entered the bridge and soon after i get a K1 alert. It lasted for maybe 20 seconds, then i get about 5 seonds of K2, and then 1 second of K3. So it seems to me that if I see K1, Ka1, or Ku1, I better slow down because if i see K3, I would be passing the cop.

Two days later, i went on east bound bay bridge. And as i approach, i get a K1 for a very long time. Then as i enter the new section of the bay bridge still under construction, K2, and then K3 for about 20 seconds, then I saw from afar a speed post with speed limit at 35mph and a digital readout of car speeds. I got closer, it becomes K4, and then K5. I pass it, then it gradually went to K4, K3, K2, K1, then nothing. Few seconds later, I got another K1, then K2, K3, K4, then I see yet another digitial speed sign, and then K5. I also got a pop detection about 45 seconds later, I didn't see a cop tho.

I should point out that on the same night, I went on the Dumbarton bridge where there is a "Radar Enforced" sign, but the 9930 did not went off at all. Also I passed by 2 parked cop cars without the detector going off. This shows that the detector only help you in certain situation. You still need to WATCH for cops.

As for features, I really like the intelliMute, it's very accurate. I drive a stick shift so i'm very aware of my RPM. The display looks great, but it's a bit too bright at night. I didn't bother with the compass because i already have a build-in navigator. the setup was extremely easy and user friendly.

I was originally going to buy an escort x50 used for $200, but amazon is selling this for $122 new. It make sense for me to get this. I don't normally speed. But i plan to drive to LA every month for the next year, and so there is no way i can stay below 70mph all the time. Highway 5 is mostly desert and farm land, so if i see a K1 alert, i'm going to slow down.

I would recommend this model because it works and it's well designed. I had an older model of Cobra a few years ago and it was dead weight. This one is different. Not great, but good for the price

Now the bad stuff:
the powercord is sooo short, no one can use it without an extension. I found one in bestbuy for $8.
The suction cup doesn't suck. I'm trying to use the velcro, but it doesn't seem to stick either. I'm thinking of getting one of those rubber mat for ppl to put cell phones on their dashboard.
The sensitivity is not as great as an escort, but if you don't ignore the level 1 alerts, you should be okay.

Nice little Cobra Radar4
The only think i can say after purchasing this radar is that it is a nice little radar that really works on both interstate and city limits. Some of my friends have even borrowed this radar from me when they had to go to a different state, and i got a very good feedback from them.

The only problem i had with this radar is Power (spiral) cord because the cigarette charger is besides the passenger seat in my 350Z, so i had to call cobra and they shipped me a straight cord without charging me a penny.

Had some problem(took me 30 mins to figure it out)in calibrating the radar in the beginning.

This will save you alot in the long run5
I have had 3 RMR units now 2 of which I still use. Let me tell you they have saved my back side several times. They work great and give you plenty of time to slow down before you reach the punch through zone. I have never gotten a speeding ticket since I started useing these jammers. The only reason I have bought 3 is bacause the radar types change. Our town just installed photo radar and my old one didn't pick it up this new one does.

good product4
I purchased unit for my teenage son unit works well he leaves in highway mode for sensitivety i would recommend this product for the price works better than same priced cobra.was driving when unit went off warning i did not see police unit kept getting stronger car was on side street and picked up police unit impressed as with any unit first test it until you are familiar and comfotable with it small light plastic enjoy!!

Escort Inc. Solo Cordless Radar/Laser/Safety Detector
From Escort Inc.

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #41766 in Consumer Electronics
  • Brand: Escort
  • Model: Solo5110

No more hassles with tangled power cords with the Escort Solo Cordless--just turn it on. This detector runs on two AA batteries for as long as 40 to 50 hours. The Solo Cordless provides long-range warning for all radar signals including X, K, and superwide Ka. New advanced four-bit analog-to-digital converter circuitry provides higher-resolution digital signal processing for even longer warning distances without more false alarms. Instead of a single laser sensor, the Solo Cordless has two. Mute and auto-mute features eliminate long-range nuisance signals. You can customize this detector with your preferred settings for power-on sequence, city-mode sensitivity, brightness, muting, and audio tones.

The Solo Cordless comes with two batteries, a manual, and a quick-release adjustable windshield mount with extra suction cups. A 12-volt power converter cord is optional. The manufacturer offers a limited one-year warranty.

Important note to customers: The manufacturer warns that the Solo Cordless detector is designed for 3-volt operation and its circuitry will not accommodate a standard 12-volt power cord. Using any cord other than the 12-volt power converter designed specifically for Solo may cause damage not covered by warranty.

SO FAR, SO GOOD!5
I've been a loyal customer of Escort back when it was Cincinnati Microwave and they know their radar detectors. It's hard to compare it to other brands because I simply haven't owned one...but seeing friends' radar detectors and the dangling cords and constant chirping that sounded the same, I feel like my detector was of better quality.

The Solo has changed a little, but it still offers accurate detection of photo-radar units (well in advance, too) and the Ka bands are dead-on. Frankly, I haven't ever picked up a laser detection signal and I don't know how much they're in use anymore...photo-radar is all the rage in my locality. The X bands will pick up false alerts from security alarms (usually from automatic doors at stores), but I'd rather have a few false alarms that quiet down automatically than to miss the one time Smokey has his gun trained on my car.

I like the ability to easily mute the sound and dim the signal lights, so as to be extra stealth in the dark. But let's face it...most cops know if you have a radar detector if you get pulled over. However, with this little Solo cordless, I've positioned it at the top of my window and someone standing outside the driver's side window cannot see it (SUV's might be different, but it depends on the thickness of your car's siding around the window.) And dangling cords are a dead giveaway and can easily be seen from behind--I'll take AA batteries any day. The unit is easy to mount and detach, too.

Personally, I have not experienced any problems with the suction-cup bracket that attaches the unit to the window--hasn't slipped or moved once and the angle is easily adjustable. But all things the same, I'd prefer a bracket that clips on the visor (like the one Solo used to have.) However it's attached, I know for a fact that this thing has saved me from some well-disguised speed traps and every photo-radar operation I've passed. If anyone has a laser experience with this unit, I'm interested in reading about it. Overall, a great investment if you have a heavy right foot, so long as you understand that no radar detector is 100% perfect. And, of course, you don't speed...which I never do.

I love this radar detector !!!5
This detector is awesome. It has saved me hundreds of dollars in tickets, hardly ever false alarms, and always gives me more than enough warning, of upcoming radar. And the portability is pricelesss.

Solo Review4
The Solo 5110 cordless radar detector has been in both my cars for about 6 months now. You can program this thing to suit your tastes in the areas of volume, automute, 4 brightness settings, 5 radar sensitivity settings, start-up mode. It's easy to take down and hide from prying eyes. It has a front mounted on-off volume control which is rare to find these days and very easy to use. Great windshield mount, easy to use. If you so choose you can run it using an optional power cord. This unit all but never falses, that's very nice. Well written owners manual. I had to send the unit in once for a problem and not only did they fix the problem but they included an extra set of batteries, an extra windshield mount and they replaced a cosmetic item all at no charge. One week turnaround also. The only downside to this detector is it's Ka band detection which for me is acceptable in an urban environment. When driving on the highway where Ka can sneak up on you I would use the cord option because the unit's sensitivity is increased slightly with it.

If your driving is primarily urban or suburban I would strongly recommend this detector. It's user friendly, easy to hide and almost never falses. If you mainly drive the highways I'd get an Escort 8500 or at least use the Solo with the cord for the added range.

Best Deal For this type of rader hands down5
This detector has very good range I can pick a rader gun up to 2 miles away ka X K Ku band. Also other futures that makes great for road travel.

I like the new Cobra XRS R7 .4
I like the new Cobra XRS R7 because people will not see
your radar or wiring or the display . I do not turn on the remote, you only need the remote to setup the divise. The sharp voice is better than the old models. Remote will not turn on automaticaly, each time you start the car manually you have to hit the power button. The remote battery is very weak. The whole idea is good but, they need to work on their remote.

Perfect for casual user like me... great for city driving. "Fire and Forget" functionnality.4
I read all the reviews I could find on the internet on this product before buying it... Some of them where not that good, but I had some concern about reviewers being sold to one brand vs the other one. I decided to try it out, and has been a great product so far.

PROS:
-Easy to install. Took me a whole 15 minutes to run the wire and install the unit.
-Clean install: No wire on your dash, no device hanging in the middle of your windshield. It's out of the way on top left of my WS, next to the rearview mirror.
-Always on: no need to turn it on or off. Just turn the key, the device starts, and will stop when you get out of the car.
-Discreet: Ok, maybe not that discreet, but it's not in the middle of your dash. AND you do not need the remote to use the device. Once it's programmed, except if you have to make settings change, you do not need the remote!

Cons:

-Range is less than a more expensive unit, but since I am not a "hyperspeeder" It does not bother me.

Notes: Some reviewers mentionned an abysmall range, poor lateral detections, a lot of false alarm: I experienced none of this! Now, one thing, I made sure that my unit was pointing right at the front of the car (my windshield is slightly curved), and was perfectly horizontal.

Conclusion: it's a good device overall, but it's a bargain at that price! If you are lokking for a RD that will be discreet on your dash, that's the one to get.

Bel lacks customer support4
Have this radar detector and am pleased with operation. Has all the bells and whistles until it gets hot. Assuming radar detectors are to be mounted on the dash or windshield, when this baby gets in the sun, you get a display memo that tells you to contact Bel for information. Upon contacting Bel, I find out that if the unit gets too hot, it shuts itself down and has to be sent in to repair at $40 a shot plus your shipping. This unit was a gift and therefore, I could stick the warranty in my ass. No receipt, no service. Unit was 8 months old when it overheated and Bel wouldn't do anything without a receipt. I called numerous times to get it repaired or replaced, to no avail. One would think when you spend $600 for a radar detector, you might just get some customer service. With Beltronics, you can keep it for a paper weight. Beltronics has the worst customer service in the industry. As they say in China: no ticky, no laundry.

Beltronics V995 Vector Radar and Laser Detector (Black/Silver)
From Beltronics

  • Brand: Beltronics
  • Model: v995
  • Dimensions: 9.00" h x 3.00" w x 10.00" l, 2.00 pounds

POP radar, Ka band, Laser. The list of funny-sounding technologies designed to nab speeders keeps growing. Fortunately, Beltronics has produced an effective, compact, and user-friendly radar detector. It's made for folks who don't want to fuss with the details, but who do want first-class protection from high-tech speed traps. By offering K-, X-, Ka-, and even Ku-band protection--plus protection from POP and laser detection--the Vector 995 covers all the bases. While testing revealed some limited problems with false alarms, this minor quibble was not enough to keep us from placing the 995 in the top tier of radar detectors, right up there with the standard-setting Escort Passport 8500 X50.

Design
While it's appropriate to make comparisons with the Escort 8500 X50, it's especially relevant here, as Escort and Beltronics, the maker of the Vector 995, recently merged all of their manufacturing and design. Apparently, many of the internal components and technology in the 995 are essentially the same as those found in the 8500, and as you'll see, our testing bears that out.

Mounting the 995 in a vehicle couldn't be easier. A small suction cup bracket slides into the unit's release mechanism and easily attaches to the windshield with light pressure. The unit is housed in a sturdy plastic case that's low profile and compact--in fact, it's a good deal sleeker and smaller than the box-shaped 8500. The rear of the unit is dominated by a receiver window. There's also an additional laser detector window that faces the passenger compartment, which is designed to detect laser signals emanating from behind the vehicle.

Another great attribute of the 995 is its easy control layout. Four buttons on the top of the unit control power, city mode on/off, display brightness, and volume/mute settings. Two of the buttons also double as selection buttons when the unit is in programming mode. During normal use the red, horizontal LCD display graphs the intensity of the radar and laser signals the unit detects, as well as the detector's sensitivity mode. Power is supplied by an included 12-volt cord, which plugs into a cigarette-lighter power socket. Unfortunately, the 995 doesn't ship with the very cool SmartCord that is included with the Escort 8500. Branded as the SmartPlug on the Beltronics side of things, it features an alert LED, as well as a built-in mute button built right into the power plug. Sadly, it's only available as a $30 option for the 995.

Features
The 995 covers the gauntlet when it comes to protection from speed trap technology. While detection of the radar bands currently in use in North America--the X, K, and Ka bands--is standard for detectors these days, the devil is in the details when it comes to on-the-road performance. Thankfully, the 995 has some extra mojo built in that makes it both more sensitive to radar signals, and smart enough to select out false alarms. The unit also features detection diodes for laser detection, and an add-on system that installs on the exterior of the vehicle, the LaserPro 905, offers enhanced laser detection, as well as laser-jamming capabilities. On top of all this protection, the 995 adds optional sensitivity to the Ku band, which is commonly used in Europe.

In addition to good multiband radar and laser sensitivity, the 995 is designed to detect the latest highway menace, POP radar (queue scary music here). POP radar guns, while still relatively rare in police departments, are used to identify speeding vehicles in heavy traffic that typically confuses other types of radar. They provide little warning as the radar signal idles at a low frequency until it transmits an extremely short, high-frequency burst to "pop" a target. The 995 is equipped with a highly sensitive receiving system and a digital signal processor designed to pick up POP signals from a safe distance. POP detection is enabled by default on the 995, unlike on the 8500--a good thing for people who don't want to mess with customization menus. While enabling POP detection can increase the number of false alarms (due to the increased sensitivity required of the unit), and it's probably why Escort decided to disable it unless the user wants it, Beltronics has obviously decided the added protection is worth a few extra bogus alerts on the 995.

And what about the alerts on the 995? In addition to audio tones, the 995 also has digital voice alerts that tell you what kind of danger lies ahead. If you're not into the Knight Rider thing, i.e., a computerized voice in your car, the audio tones do a good job, as well. In this mode, a unique tone or chirp is assigned to a specific kind of radar threat. The 995's AutoMute feature automatically lowers the volume level of an alert after a period of time, so you can drive without going completely batty to the sound of alerts.

For those who like a little more control, the 995 can be customized via a fairly straightforward interface. In the programming mode, the LCD acts as a menu system that lets users control display brightness, automatic mute, audio tones, and power-on modes. There are also settings for disabling detection of selected bands (be careful with this one!). A mode called Tech Display shows the numeric frequency of the radar signal being received.

For those living in states that prohibit use of a radar detector, the 995 does include VG-2 radar-detector detector protection, which is designed to both alert the driver and shut down the unit's oscillator.

On the Road
False alarms are one of the major annoyances of radar-detector use. In our tests, the 8500 was pretty good at minimizing false alarms from home garage door systems, as well as from home and commercial security systems that commonly operate on X-band radar. While false alarms were slightly more common with the 995 than with the 8500, the error rate was acceptable, and it is likely due to the 995's default activation of POP radar sensitivity.

The 995's city sensitivity setting decreases sensitivity to X-band sources, while the highway setting does not. With this unit, though, you'll quickly find that neither setting is necessary. Instead, we found the unit's powerful AutoSelect mode the most accurate, as it dynamically filtered all types of radar signals and usually identified which sources were a legitimate threat. With that kind of simplicity built in, we were comfortable just firing up the 995 and forgetting about it, until we really needed it.

Pros

  • Performance roughly equivalent to the Escort 8500 X50
  • Just turn it on and go. AutoSelect feature automatically filters highway and city false alarms.
  • Pop radar detection enabled by default
  • High-caliber, multi-band sensitivity puts this one in the top tier of detectors
Cons
  • No included SmartCord
  • Slightly more false alarms when measured against Escort 8500 X50

Whether the threat is in North America or abroad, the Beltronics Vector 995 radar detector keeps you driving safely. As the industry leader in technology and innovation, the V995 accurately detects all US radar and laser bands (X, K, Ka) as well as the UK favorite-Ku. All bands are detected at the furthest possible distance including the newest "POP" mode Ka-band threat. With clear voice alerts, you can keep your eyes on the road, not the detector. And when it does alert, the mute button is right in easy reach on the included SmartPlug power cord. No need to leave the detector behind while traveling--we include the hard sided protective carrying case so the detector goes where you go.

Superior Detection
The Vector 995 includes full X, K, SuperWide Ka, Ku and Safety Warning System radar capability, laser detection, patented Mute and AutoMute features, audible and visual band alerts, and all the performance you'd expect from Beltronics.

Digital signal processing (DSP) technology and multiple laser sensors give you long-range performance, and greatly reduce the number of false alarms. On top of that, the Vector 995 is invisible to VG-2 radar detector detectors, keeping you one step ahead. It also features Highway/City sensitivity settings to tailor performance to your needs.

Easy to Use
The rugged Vector 995 gives you control right at your fingertips. Patented Mute and AutoMute technology allows you to quickly silence alerts. Advanced programming lets you customize several features, and all controls are easily accessible on top of the device.

Installation is also a snap: use the quick release Windshield QuickMount to attach it to your vehicle's windshield, and remove it in a snap. Don't want to leave it in your vehicle? No problem, Beltronics includes a travel case to keep it secure while you're on foot.

AutoScan Mode
The V995's AutoScan mode provides long-range warning, with minimum false alarms. In this mode, the V995's internal computer continuously analyzes all incoming signals and intelligently filters out false alarms.

Voice Alerts
The V995 provides digital voice announcements of radar and laser bands detected. If Safety Radar (SWS) is turned on, a safety radar message will also be announced.

Smart Plug Included
Once you are notified to a threat, Beltronics' SmartPlug makes it easy to temporarily silence your radar detector with a handy mute button.

Ultra-Bright LED Display
Don't miss a visual alert with the 995's 280-LED alphanumeric display. Exclusive threat display tracks and displays multiple radar signals, including signal strength. You can also view Safety Warning System (SWS) messages about upcoming hazards, construction and more.

Enjoy three different brightness settings or operate in dark mode if you'd prefer only audio alerts.

Total Tracking Laser
Unlike Radar signals, which are highly reflective, Laser signals have very poor reflective characteristics. Many of today's Laser detectors do not have the high sensitivity necessary to detect Laser within a large "field of view." The Vector 995 incorporates Beltronics' best laser detection, which uses twin laser ports to detect energy far outside the main laser beam--including off-axis signals--providing a 360-degree field of view. The alerts provided by your unit are the same whether signals are received from the front or rear.

How Safety Radar Works
Safety Warning System (SWS) a modified K-band radar signal to alert users of Highway Construction or Maintenance, Highway Hazard Zone Advisories, Weather Related Hazards, Travel Information/Convenience, and Fast/Slow Moving Vehicles. The SWS safety radar system has 64 possible messages (60 currently allocated), all of which can be displayed on your Vector 995.

Ranks with the elite radar detectors in performance5
I got the Vector 995 because its performance is at par with the top of the line radar detectors from Bel, Escort, Valentine. Even though I rarely speed above general traffic flow, speed enforcement has picked up a lot and I didn't want to pay back-door taxes.

Its radar detection performance is at par with the best of them - usually just 5% or so less than the best for a given test. But the cost difference is way more than 5%, more like 25%+. Its laser detection is its weakness, but only when compared to the top of the line models. However, the laser detection weakness isn't really critical because laser guns are so fast and accurate that the officer has already clocked your speed before even the detector alerts (even the best one). Don't take my word for it, just go ask your local police officer. Also, the rear facing sensor is quite useless on most detectors - someone in marketing thought it would be cool and all other brands followed. It is also one of the very few detectors which can detect the Ku band, which is rumored to be introduced in the US soon (already there in Europe).

It also falses significantly less than what I've had before. I can't compare with the top 4 because I don't have them. AutoScan works best in city or when in new areas; Highway works best on rural areas or highways. Use AutoScan with care, it filters all bands and can potentially reduce detection range (because it spends some time figuring out if the radar signal pattern is like those from typical sources of falsing). Its Tech mode (showing radar freq) can be used to find out real speed gun threat when a cunning officer hangs out in an area where detectors often false (drugstore, grocery store, etc) - not fool proof though. One should note that the 'false alerts' are not really false - they ARE actually radar signals in the same band used by police. It's called 'false' because it's not a 'cop' radar signal.

POP mode, while a nice feature, usually trigger a lot of falsing on most detectors - because of leaky/crappy detectors like the Cobras. I've enabled POP for the last 3 weeks and have run it in AutoScan and City modes - no difference in falsing. Even the top 4 detectors today can't beat this. Also, the review/description is wrong - POP is disabled by default on the 995 also (maybe Bel changed it after the review).

The Vector 995 is the only one in the Vector series that can have its firmware upgraded by Beltronics - useful if they have some bug fixes and/or they have an update that does better detection.

It also has a few less features than the top 4, but I didn't care for those. Its got all the essential features one really needs for its intended use and does them extremely well. Its stellar performance makes it an awesome deal for a $225 price. I got mine on a special sale at Amazon for even less :). However, like any radar detector (even the best ones), this radar detector is NOT a cop detector - so drive sensibly.

Even when the 995 is having a bad day, it is waaaaay better than the most expensive Cobra/Whistler radar detectors.

Like any product, it has quirks:
1. 3.5mm jack volume - it's just too loud even at one click above minimum (I use it when spouse/kids are sleeping on a long drive)
2. Buttons for visor clip - if you get the visor clip, the buttons are not easy to reach

And last but most important, please drive carefully. Lives are more important than seconds/minutes saved by excessive speeding and rash driving.

Bonus tips:
a. Tutorial mode - manual doesn't mention it, but I stumbled on it. Press the Dark and Mute buttons down and then the Power button to turn the unit on. Voila - tutorial mode!! Power button press exits this mode.
b. Audio/Voice alerts - learn to identify the bands with your ears, the range based on audio beep frequency, it helps keep your eyes focused where they need to be - on the road. I've turned Voice off after a couple of months, and rarely need to look at it (except in Tech mode).
c. Ebay/Unauthorized dealers - Beltronics honors warranty from authorized dealers only. Amazon itself is authorized (may change in future), Amazon's sellers are not. Ebay is not, most stuff there are refurbs or rejects and hence the low low prices. You've been informed, use common sense.

Well... no tickets so far!4
If this is your first Radar Detector, it takes a little getting used to. I've had my Beltronics 995 for about a year or so now. It's been quite useful. It will NOT save you if you pass a cop and he decides to tag you. I lucked out one night when the cop couldn't find a place to turn around quickly enough when he waited until I was right next to him (going to the other way) when he turned his radar on. Do NOT think any radar detector is an excuse to drive however you feel... you WILL regret it.

Also, banks, gas stations and a lot of other little things will set the Beltronics 995 ablaze with lights and sounds.

If you're in one area, and can learn where the bands are, this radar detector becomes VERY useful. A good example... I got X band in an area where I always got K band... sure enough, there's a cop sitting right there. Also, the voice saying the band is kind of useful, as I don't have to look at it.

The Beltronics 995 offers a wide range of bands it'll detect. The tones can be adjusted to be quiet (they're pretty dang loud off factory settings and'll scare the hell out of you when you get your first tones). You can also mute it when it drives your significant other nuts.

On the whole, I'm pretty happy with it... would I buy another in the future? Probably.

BEL Vector 995 great!4
I've had this for about a week, and it seems to be working very well. The "autoscan" feature is very nice since I seemed to forget to switch between "city" and "highway" with my older units.

The voice prompts are very clear, and the automute keeps the annoying beeps to a comfortable level.

I've had several radar detectors over the years, and this one certainly seems to be the best so far. It is also rated very highly in the amgazine articles I found.

Rocky Mountain Radar K.A.T. Inc KAT-600 Radar and Laser Detector with Voice Alert

The KAT600 scrambles all police laser speed measurement devices and operates automatically. The KAT600 provides distinct visual and audible alerts to warn you of the presence of X, K, and all kinds of Ka Band radar guns in the front and rear of you. This model also provides the benefit of `undetectability¿ by alerting you to the presence of VG-2 (`The Radar Detector detector¿). It also incorporates a new safety feature - Safety Alert(SA) and Safety Warning System(SWS). This safety feature warns you of the presence of potential road hazards by detecting signals from safety radar transmitting devices.

  • Amazon Sales Rank: #53135 in Consumer Electronics
  • Brand: Kat
  • Model: 7.83E+11
  • Dimensions: 5.00" h x 2.00" w x 10.25" l, .59 pounds

The KAT600 is a completely integrated radar/laser detector which responds not only to all the radar guns in use today, including "Stalker," but also to the other latest development in speed monitoring devices--the laser gun. Add Rocky Mountain technologies like Micro-Scan and Smart-Scan, competitive features like Safety Warning System detection, and complete laser radar scrambling and you've got some feature-packed peace of mind.

A completely integrated radar/laser detector with laser scrambling. Click to enlarge.

Includes coiled vehicle power cord.

Bracket for windshield mounting included.

Wide Detection
The KAT600 provides distinct visual and audible alerts to warn you of the presence of X, K, and all kinds of Ka Band radar guns in the front and rear of you. It also provides 360 degree laser detection with adaptive laser tracking (ALT) for better laser performance. Stay alert with a 3.4 mile radar detection range for radar and 2.5 miles for laser.

Integrated Laser Scrambler Disables Police LIDAR
Lidar sends out laser pulses and measures how long it takes to hit your car and come back. From the speed of light it can determine your range. It sends out several more pulses and calculates your speed from the change in distance over time. The KAT-600 transmits pulses electronically timed at 100 feet apart. This only allows the Lidar to see up to 100 feet so it is unable to calculate your speed.

VG-2 Immunity
VG-2 are devices police use to detect radar detectors. This model provides the benefit of 'undetectability' by alerting you to the presence of VG-2 signals.

Advanced Micro-Scan
Scans the radar bands 2-4 times faster than as any other detector. This allows Rocky Mountain devices to pick up the new P.O.P. radar that no one else can.

Smart-Scan
When Rocky Mountain devices detect radar in one scan, they repeat that scan, instead of completing programmed scans and returning. This means they detect quicker with less false alarms than any other detector.

Safety Alert and Safety Warning System
The KAT600 unit incorporates the Safety Alerts (SA) and Safety Warning Systems (SWS) detection. This safety feature warns you of the presence of potential road hazards by detecting signals from safety transmitting devices.

City Mode
The false-alert are often caused in urban areas by automatic door openers and alarm systems. The KAT600 features a City mode, in which the X band is not detected and K/Ka band sensitivity is lowered.

K.A.T. 600 RADAR / Laser Detector1
This is the worst Detector I have ever purchased, it is a fake. We traveled to Daytona Beach and it did not do anything, it went off when were a few cars from The Patrolmen. We were behind other traffic and that's the only thing that saved us. There is no voice alert as advertised. Saved your money & time on this. Amazon, you need to take a look at this detector.

I like my old one better3
My old one was stolen from my car so I bought this hoping it would be better. First time it went off the cop was 2 feet from me,maybe he had just turned on his radar. I still need to read the directions to read the codes but it has gone off when I have seen someone pulled over but yesterday it went off about 2 second before the cop was in site hiding. It weighs about nothing and looks cheap. Has no real options other than volume and city or highway. After that you just have to hope.

Great Detector and blocker5
Used for over two years now and ticket free.
Working for a major delivery co. for 22 years I have a tendency to drive aggressively. Lets you know of upcoming speed trap well before line of sight. Watched an officer tap his laser gun against the palm of his hand like it was broken. Am purchasing a second for my wife's car
